Lumbar Spine Management

15 Credit Hours Approved

Course Description

This Course will cover effective evaluation, diagnosing, and treatment of Lumbar and Sacroiliac dysfunction. We will review the current evidence for Lumbar and SIJ treatment. Course will discuss red flags and safety concerns when utilizing manual therapy, especially manipulation or thrust joint mobilization of the lumbar spine. The lab components will allow for interactive learning of manipulations, nerve glide techniques, and mobility/motor control concepts of the lumbopelvic region.

Objectives
  1. Understand the risk factors associated with spinal manipulation and screen patients properly using a thorough history and targeted physical examination.
     
  2. Perform a thorough and objective examination using clinical practice guidelines and current best evidence.
     
  3. Demonstrate an excellent understanding of the most current evidence based practice in regards to manual therapy and thrust and non-thrust joint mobilization techniques in the treatment of patients with low back pain.
     
  4. Demonstrate proper technique with lumbar mobilization and thrust manipulation to the lumbar and lower thoracic regions.
     
  5. Demonstrate proper technique with all Thoracolumbar and Lumbopelivic mobility drills and motor control exercises.

Day One

9:00 - 9:30am Lumbar Examination

9:30 - 10:00am Examination Lab

10:00 - 10:30am Subgrouping and Manual Therapy

10:30 - 11:00am Lumbar Manipulation Safety

11:00 - 12:00pm Lab – Lumbar HVLAT

12:00 - 1:00pm Lunch

1:00 - 1:30pm Lumbar mobilization lab

1:30 - 2:30pm Lumbar mobility/motor control

2:30 - 2:45pm Break

2:45 - 3:30pm Lab – Low thoracic manipulation

3:30 - 4:30pm Thoracic mobility/motor control

4:30 - 5:00pm Lab Break Out

Day Two

8:00 - 8:30am Patient expectation and HEP

8:30 - 9:30am Open Lab

9:30 - 11:00am Chronic Low Back Pain

12:00 - 1:00pm Lunch

1:00 - 1:30pm SIJ diagnosis and treatment

1:30 - 2:00pm SIJ thrust

2:30 – 3:00pm The hip and LBP

3:00 - 3:15pm Break

3:15 – 4:30pm Selected Hip techniques

4:30 – 5:00pm Open lab: Break Out
